Important Changes in wood waste regulations that impact how we handle your wood waste

New guidelines from the Environment Agency on wood waste. which begins from 1st September 2023 brings about changes to the handling of potentially hazardous wood waste.

Hazardous Wood Waste

What Has Changed?

The Environment Agency (EA) has officially declared that Regulatory Position Statement (RPS) 250 will be discontinued, effective September 1st, 2023. This decision carries significant implications for the management of waste wood within the construction and demolition (C&D) sector.

Consequently, specific categories of waste wood, which were formerly classed as non-hazardous and therefore could be sent to wood recycling facilities, will now require a classification as ‘hazardous waste’ unless subjected to comprehensive analysis to establish their non-hazardous composition. Accordingly, the appropriate course of action would be to dispose of such wood waste at an authorized facility capable of processing hazardous wood waste.

Under the current provisions of RPS 250, waste wood items with potential hazardous attributes from the C&D industry are classed as non-hazardous. Nevertheless, following an extensive series of assessments conducted by the Wood Recyclers Association (WRA) to gauge the presence of hazardous substances in wood-based articles, the EA has made the determination to retract RPS 250, commencing from September 1st, 2023.

What this means for you

The impact of these changes means that some types of waste wood that we have previously accepted and classed as ‘non-hazardous waste’ will now NOT be accepted in our skips.

Wood that is dated from 2007 onwards CAN be placed in our skips.

Any external wood dated between 1950 to 2007 will be classed as Hazardous and CANNOT be placed in our skips.

This includes the following :

– Railway Sleepers
– Telegraph Poles
– Treated / Creosote Wood
– Roof Battens
– Exterior wood cladding
– Garden Shed & Fencing
– Barge Boards, Fascias and Soffits
– External Joinery, incl Joists
– Timber Frames
– External doors and windows
– Wood for Marine Use

  • An exception to the 1950 to 2007 ruling is when renovating kitchens, bathrooms and other internal rooms where wood can be found. Wood waste such such as flooring and internal doors or staircases CAN be placed in our skips, even if pre 2007.
  • We will also accept pre-2007 waste wood where evidence can be provided in the form of the correct certification which demonstrates that your pre-2007 wood waste is non-hazardous.
